What You Should Know If Your Home Was Built Before 1975

Everything is subject to the natural course of wear and tear, and our home is not of exemption. As a homeowner living in a house built after 1975, you must take specific precautions. This type of house may already be needing some repairs due to the natural wearing off of some of its components, such as your pipes. Houses constructed before 1975 typically feature pipelines made of cast iron, often hidden underground.

To prevent certain inevitable sewage problems, you must take specific precautionary measures. The natural timespan of the iron cast pipeline is about 50 to 100 years. There are certain factors that may speed up its wearing off and deterioration, such as corrosion.

Internal and external corrosion

Corrosion may either be external or internal corrosion. The external corrosion may be directly linked to the materials that can be found in soil. A scientific study has revealed that soil contains elevated levels of acidity and toxins, which can contribute to pipeline rust. Although external rust on the pipeline might not initially seem significant, over time, it can impact the internal piping. The internal piping is also prone to this corrosive material such as sulphuric acid. The wastewater that is running through the pipelines can cause a hydrogen sulfide gas buildup which, once oxidized, may result in sulphuric acid. Sulfuric acid can be the main culprit of internal corrosion.

Before using some household drain cleaners, it is a must that you read the label and check as to the presence of sulphuric acid. If it does, then do not use it, for it will accelerate the timespan of your pipeline for sulphuric acid causing internal corrosion.

If you live in places that have a salt and moisture environment like Florida, it will most likely speed up the timespan of your pipeline. Usually, the problem with the pipeline may go unnoticed for years, considering that these pipelines are hidden behind the walls. If left unnoticed and repaired, it may balloon a much more severe sewage problem.

Looking for cues as to pipe problems

Certain cues or signs will alert you that your pipeline requires replacement. Visually you can easily assess if the pipeline is in good condition and if it is not. Rusted, cracked, and discolored pipes indicate poor condition.

Signs of water damage

The bad condition of the pipelines, such as being rusty, cracked, and discolored, will sprout to a much more serious problem such as having leaks, foul smell may be emitted that can attract bacteria and pests. This can be attributed to water damage.

You must check if you are experiencing the following house conditions, such as having slow drains, roach or pest infestation due to foul smells, clogs or backups, warped wood floors, tinted floor tiles, broken tiles, water-stained and discolored carpets or rugs, and water-stained tiles.

Failing to promptly address this water damage issue can significantly impact the value of your house. This is because a broken plumbing issue commonly results in a reduced market value for the property.

Water damage may also pose a serious threat to the health of your family members, such as it may trigger coughing, fatigue, eye irritation, and other illnesses that may be linked to moist water atmospheres.

Make the necessary replacement or repair of the pipe

There are problems that can easily be avoided once prompt and immediate action is being taken. If the cues and signs are present in your pipeline, do not just sulk and do nothing. The clock is ticking for the replacement of the pipelines. Better consult an expert plumber to do the immediate assessment of your pipes if repair is needed or a total replacement.

The immediate and prompt action to do the repairs and replacement will give you a peace of mind that you are not exposing your family members to possible health risks brought by water-damaged pipes.

It may entail time and money, but the sense of security that you will have in having good condition pipelines is more than that. It will make you avoid having a bad day due to the foul smell emitted by the broken pipelines.

Living a comfortable life in a house that was built prior to 1975 is easy. All you have to do is be vigilant as to what are the things that needed to be repaired and replaced.
